Bridge ’Em

A bridge-building game inspired by a mobile game I played when I was younger. Getting the bridges to fall apart was the difficult bit.

From a mobile game to my own version

I used to play a 2D bridge-building game on my phone, and that was the starting point for Bridge ’Em. I made it for the second Aviator ARCADE Game Jam.

I also had a 3D character I’d made and wanted a reason to use. Seeing that character in an actual game was one of the most satisfying parts of making it.

Working out when a bridge has failed

The physics took much longer to figure out than I expected. Getting the bridge to behave properly was one thing; reliably detecting when it had fallen over was another. I eventually got it working after a lot of experimenting.

Bridge ’Em placed third for Best Artistic Design in the jam. It was nice to see a small project, built around an idea I remembered from my phone, end up being played by other people.
