Sonar Shooters

I wanted to model a submarine. That turned into a small shooter and an experiment in making a scene feel underwater.

Making it
feel underwater

The submarine was the starting point. I wanted to make the model, then see what I could do with an underwater setting around it.

The lighting was harder than I expected. The scene itself wasn’t actually underwater, so I used an overlay and worked on the lighting to create that impression. I enjoyed working out the effect in my head and then getting it to happen in the engine.

A short
assessment

I made Sonar Shooters for the first IGB100 mini-game assessment at QUT. The brief was a shoot-’em-up prototype with a design portfolio and playtesting evidence.

The gameplay is straightforward: move around the arena, fight enemy submarines and buy upgrades. I kept the scope small for the assessment, and the underwater look is the part I most enjoyed figuring out.
